Kava is a plant used throughout the Pacific Islands for medicinal and cultural purposes. It’s roots are ground into a powder, mixed with water, and consumed during social, religious, and political gatherings. The earth-tasting liquid acts as a natural sedative anesthetic. During a Sigatoka River Safari, the Fijian villagers of Vunarewa invited us to participate in one of their traditional yaqona ceremonies — where I joined Chief Esala for a big drink. 😀
